In Caribbean Cruises & Ports of Call 2001, Frommer’s thoroughly reviews all Celebrity ships.  The sections below are synopses of the text that applies to the Century.

The Ship

The Century is spacious, glamorous and comfortable, mixing sleekly modern and vaguely art-deco styles, throwing in a cutting edge art collection (containing impressive works by such artists as Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol).  The décor casts a chic and sophisticated mood, with warm wood tones as well as rich, tactile textures and fabrics in deep primaries, from faux zebra skin to buttery soft leathers, velvets, chrome, and futuristic-looking applications of glass and marble.

Cabins

Simple yet pleasing décor is cheerful and based on light-colored furniture and monochromatic themes of muted purple-blue, green, or magenta.  All cabins have built-in vanities/desks, minibars, hair dryers, radios, and safes.  Closets and drawer space and roomy and well designed, as are the bathrooms, and all standard cabins have twin beds convertible to doubles.

Public Areas

The ship’s dining and lounge areas support the elegant mood.  The two-story formal dining room on the Century, the Grand Restaurant, is a stunning room reminiscent of the grand liners of yesteryear, punctuated by a wide and dramatic staircase leading into the ground floor of the restaurant, and by a floor-to-ceiling wall of glass facing astern to the ship’s wake.  For aficionados of hand-rolled cigars and fine cognac, Michael’s Club is decorated like the parlor of a London men’s club.  Guests who do not find that smoky ambiance appealing can visit Tastings Coffee Bar, which offers every kind of upscale caffeine you can imagine.  Passengers may choose to sip their cappuccino in the ship’s cozy library.

The multi-tiered, glass-walled nightclub/disco is spacious, sprawling, and classy in a clean, modern way, yet designed with many cozy nooks for romantic conversation over champagne.  The casino is large and lively.  The double-decker theater has unobstructed views from almost every seat, state-of-the-art equipment, a cantilevered orchestra pit, and a wall of video screens to augment the action on the stage.
